For most men in Pakistan the best hair oil is a simple one used lightly: on the scalp once or twice a week, washed out after an hour or two, not left all day in the heat. Plain coconut oil works. Glow Halal Hair Oil blends coconut, sweet almond (a tree nut), kalonji and vitamin D — Rs 1,200, COD. No oil stops a receding hairline — see a dermatologist.
What men's hair actually deals with — and where oil helps
Oil helps with some of these and makes others worse.
| Problem | Usual cause | Does oil help? | What actually helps |
| Dry, rough, frizzy hair | Sun, hard water, dust, shampooing every day | Yes | Oil once or twice a week; a mild shampoo |
| Breakage (short, snapped hairs on the comb) | Dryness, towel rubbing, combing wet hair, heavy gel | Yes | Oil plus gentler handling |
| Dry, flaky scalp (small white flakes, tight feeling) | Winter, very hot showers, over-washing | Yes, a little | Oil 1–2 hours before washing; lukewarm water |
| Dandruff (yellowish, greasy flakes, itching) | Seborrhoeic dermatitis — a yeast that feeds on scalp oil | No — heavy oiling can make it worse | Anti-dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide |
| Oily scalp in summer | Heat, sweat, helmets and caps | No — keep oil off the roots | Wash more often; oil only dry lengths, if at all |
| Receding hairline, thinning crown | Male-pattern hair loss (genes and hormones) | No | A dermatologist |
| Sudden shedding or bald patches | Illness, high fever, low iron, thyroid, alopecia areata | No | A doctor and blood tests |

How men should oil: less oil, shorter time, washed out
Most men have short hair, and short hair needs very little oil. Anything extra just sits on the scalp and collects sweat and dust.
- Use less. For short hair, about a teaspoon is plenty. For medium-length hair, two.
- Fingertips on the scalp for five minutes, in slow circles. Not nails.
- Leave it 1–2 hours, not all day. In summer, oil left on mixes with sweat and builds up on the scalp.
- Shampoo on dry hair first, then add water. The oil comes out in one wash instead of three.
- Once or twice a week. Once is enough in the hottest months; twice in a dry winter.
Three Pakistani habits worth changing: if you ride a motorbike, wash the oil out before the helmet goes on — oil, sweat and a helmet make an itchy, greasy scalp. The same goes for a cap or topi worn for hours. And if you use gel or wax daily, wash it out daily rather than layering oil on top. The full routine: how to do champi properly.
A receding hairline: the honest part
A hairline moving back at the temples, or thinning at the crown, is usually male-pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is driven by genes and hormones, it is very common, and no oil changes it — not coconut, not kalonji, not onion, and not ours.
Medicines do exist. Minoxidil (applied to the scalp) and finasteride (a tablet) are the two most studied. Both can have side effects, both only work for as long as you keep using them, and they are better at keeping the hair you still have than at bringing back what is gone. So the earlier you see a dermatologist, the more choice you have. Do not start either one on a friend's advice or straight off a pharmacy counter.
Rosemary oil has one small 2015 study in male-pattern thinning. What it showed, and what it did not: rosemary vs kalonji oil for hair. In the meantime, two practical things: a shorter cut makes thinning less obvious, and a thinning crown burns in strong sun, so wear a cap outdoors.
Hair oils men commonly use — compared
What each brand publishes about its ingredients (checked 25 October 2026; formulas change, so read your bottle's label). It shows what is declared, not how well any oil works — ours included.
| Oil | What the brand lists | Suits men who… | Keep in mind |
| Plain coconut oil (e.g. Parachute 100% Pure Coconut Oil) | Coconut oil only | Want one cheap, well-studied oil for dryness and breakage | Solid in winter; heavy on an oily scalp |
| Dabur Amla Hair Oil | Amla and vitamin C named; full list not published on its Pakistan pages | Prefer a traditional amla oil | Check the back label for the base oil |
| Hemani 7 Oils in One | Aloe vera, amla, coconut oil, garlic, jojoba oil, neem and rosemary named; full list not published | Want a multi-oil blend | Read the full label for allergens |
| Saeed Ghani Mughziat Hair Oil | Sesame oil, mineral oil, castor oil and fragrance, then about 30 herbal extracts | Like a classic desi blend | Fragrance can bother a sensitive scalp |
| ChiltanPure Red Onion Oil | Onion extract, sesame oil | Want to try an onion oil | Research on onion for hair is thin; strong smell |
| Mustard oil (sarson, any brand) | Mustard oil | Like a warm winter champi | Strong smell; irritates some people's skin |
| Glow Halal Hair Oil (ours) | Coconut oil, sweet almond oil, kalonji oil, vitamin D — the complete list | Want coconut oil with almond for slip and kalonji for the scalp | Contains almond (tree nut) and coconut |

When to see a doctor
- Your hairline or crown is thinning and it bothers you — see a dermatologist early.
- Round, smooth bald patches on the scalp or in the beard.
- Heavy shedding 2–3 months after a high fever such as dengue or typhoid, an operation or a new medicine.
- A red, scaly, sore or pus-filled scalp.
- Dandruff that has not improved after four weeks of anti-dandruff shampoo.
Where to buy
- Plain coconut oil: any supermarket, kiryana store or pansar. The label should say only "coconut oil".
- Branded blends: supermarkets and pharmacies, where you can read the label in your hand.
- Single oils (kalonji, castor, mustard): pansar and attar shops. Ask for a sealed bottle and fresh stock.
- Daraz: the widest choice, but fake and diluted oils are sold there. Check the seller's rating, prefer a brand's official store, and reject a broken seal. Before you pay: how to spot an original hair oil.

FAQ
Should men oil their hair at all?
If your hair or scalp is dry, yes — once or twice a week. If your scalp is oily and your hair is healthy, you do not need to.
Can hair oil stop a receding hairline?
No. A receding hairline is male-pattern hair loss, which oil does not change. Medicines exist; a dermatologist can tell you whether they suit you.
Which oil is best for men with an oily scalp?
Often none on the scalp. Wash more often, and if the lengths are dry, put a few drops on the lengths only. Greasy, yellow flakes are dandruff, which needs an anti-dandruff shampoo rather than oil.
Can I leave oil in overnight?
In a dry winter, yes, if your scalp is not oily. In summer, an hour or two is better.
Can I use hair oil on my beard?
A few drops of a light oil on a dry, itchy beard is fine. Red, flaky skin under the beard is often the same seborrhoeic dermatitis as dandruff and needs the same kind of shampoo.
General information, not medical advice. A receding hairline, bald patches or sudden heavy shedding need a doctor, not an oil.
