To spot an original hair oil, check the bottle, the seller and the label. A genuine branded bottle has clean print, correct spelling, an intact seal and a printed batch number and expiry; distrust prices far below supermarket rates. Loose "desi" oil that is water-thin or smells only of perfume may be adulterated. If mineral oil or paraffinum liquidum is listed first, the oil is mostly mineral oil.
Genuine or counterfeit bottle: what to check
Copies of popular hair oil brands are sold in bazaars and online in Pakistan — same shape, same colours, cheaper oil inside.
| Check | Genuine bottle, usually | Counterfeit, often |
| Name and spelling | Brand name exactly right | One letter off, or a lookalike name |
| Print | Sharp, straight label, even colours | Blurry print, crooked label, glue marks |
| Seal | Seal or shrink-wrap intact (if the brand uses one) | No seal, loose cap, oil around the neck |
| Batch and expiry | Printed; the same on box and bottle | Missing, handwritten, or a sticker over an old date |
| Price | Close to the supermarket shelf price | Far lower — "stock clearance", "factory rate" |
| Seller | Brand's website, official store, large supermarket | New seller, no rating, reviews saying "smell was different" |
| The oil | Same colour, smell and thickness as your last genuine bottle | Thinner, different colour, different smell or just perfume |
The most useful home check is a side-by-side comparison. Put the bottle next to one you know is genuine — bought from a big supermarket, or your last bottle — and compare the label, the cap, the colour of the oil and the smell. Counterfeits are most often caught on smell and thickness.
Barcodes: a barcode that scans proves little, because barcodes are easy to copy. But a missing barcode on a brand that always prints one is a warning sign.
Adulterated loose oil: what gets mixed in
| What is added | Why | Possible sign |
| Mineral oil / liquid paraffin | Cheap, never goes rancid, colourless, odourless | A water-clear, very thin "desi" oil — but no home test confirms it |
| Cheap cooking oil (soybean, palm, cottonseed) | To stretch the volume | The oil's own smell is faint; "pure" coconut oil will not set fully in the fridge |
| Perfume | To hide a cheap smell | A sweet, scented smell instead of the oil's natural one |
| Colour | To look "herbal" | Bright green or red oil |
Know the natural smell of each oil:
- Kalonji oil: strong, bitter, peppery smell and a dark colour. An odourless "kalonji oil" is suspect.
- Sweet almond oil: pale yellow, very faint smell. A strong marzipan or "almond essence" scent suggests added fragrance, or bitter almond oil.
- Coconut oil: virgin oil smells of coconut; refined coconut oil has almost no smell. So odourless coconut oil is not automatically fake.
The fridge test — only for pure coconut oil
Put two spoonfuls in a clean glass in the fridge (not the freezer) for 30–60 minutes. Pure coconut oil sets solid and white. If a thin liquid layer stays on top or apart, another oil has been mixed in.
It does not work for almond, kalonji, mustard or sesame oil, which stay liquid in the fridge. A blended hair oil that half-sets or splits into layers is not fake — that is what blends do. And fractionated coconut oil is made to stay liquid.
Tests that don't work
| Test | The truth |
| Dropping oil in water to see if it floats | Every oil floats — it proves nothing |
| A grease spot on paper | Shows only that it is oil; mineral oil leaves the same spot |
| Darker colour means stronger oil | Colour can be added |
| Setting it alight | Dangerous, and proves nothing |
| Tasting it | Don't — hair oil is not food |
How to read the label
- Order: on a label that follows the international (INCI) convention, ingredients run from most to least. The first one is the biggest.
- Mineral oil's names: mineral oil, paraffinum liquidum, liquid paraffin, petrolatum. If these come first and the herbs come last, you are mostly buying mineral oil. Mineral oil is not poison; the problem is paying "pure herbal" prices for it.
- Fragrance and colour: "parfum" or "fragrance" is added scent; "CI" followed by a number is a colour.
- Botanical names: Cocos Nucifera is coconut, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis is sweet almond, Nigella Sativa is kalonji, Ricinus Communis is castor, Sesamum Indicum is sesame, Emblica Officinalis is amla.
- Herbs listed but no base oil? Then the biggest ingredient is the one not named.

Where buying is safer
| Where | Risk of fakes | What to do |
| The brand's own website or WhatsApp | Lowest | Check you are on the real website |
| Large supermarkets (Imtiaz, Chase Up, Naheed) | Low | Check the seal and expiry |
| A pansar shop you know | Medium | Clean bottle, fresh stock, small amount first |
| Unknown sellers on Daraz, Facebook or Instagram | Higher | Look for the brand's official store; read ratings and reviews |
| Footpath stalls and "sale" tables | Highest | Don't buy branded bottles here |

If you think you got a fake
- Stop using it. If it stings or itches, wash it out with a mild shampoo. Swelling or blisters need a doctor.
- Keep the evidence: bottle, box, receipt or order screenshot, and photos of the batch number and seal.
- Contact the seller. If you bought online, complain through the marketplace and report the listing.
- Tell the brand through its official website or number.
- For a bigger loss, every province in Pakistan has a consumer protection law and consumer courts.

FAQ
Can you buy original hair oil on Daraz?
Yes, from the brand's official store or a well-rated seller with genuine-looking reviews. Counterfeits are sold there too, so avoid listings priced far below the shops.
Is hair oil with mineral oil harmful?
Usually not. It coats the hair and most people tolerate it. The issue is when it is sold as "pure herbal oil".
My coconut oil didn't set in the fridge — is it fake?
If the label says only "coconut oil" and it is still liquid after an hour, suspect a mix. The test does not apply to blended hair oils or fractionated coconut oil.
Is cheap hair oil always fake?
No. Plain coconut oil is cheap and genuine. Be suspicious when a famous brand, or an expensive oil such as kalonji or almond, is sold far below its usual price.
